To all the new clan cats, welcome. I'm Drani. In the series, I'm the female who manages the cub nursery, since I enjoy being with young ones, and those who are young in mind. I'm also in training as a herder, and I look after the little dappleback horses. Fessran, who used to herd the dapplebacks, has gone on to become Firekeeper leader, so I took over.

I'm friendly, and very forgiving of mistakes. Don't worry if you make a mess in the Sandpile; that's what it's for.

Come and nose-touch, or head-rub with me. Prrrrr.

Drani

*OOC: Since no one has used this yet, I thought I"d try out a new character that's been lurking in my brain. Please excuse me if this isn't up to my usual writing. I'm getting a little tired.*

IC: The young female walked forward, twitching her dun tail. Her dark blue eyes cleared, grew opaque and cleared again. Lifting her nose, she tested the wind, searching for the Named female's scent. At last she saw the other female, standing at the edge of an enormous sandpile. Dropping her gaze, River Eyes walked forward. "Greetings. This one...this one would like...to speak with the Named." The words sounded clumsy even to River's ears and she almost retreated into the Song again. No. She shook her head, the fur at her nape rising. She was curious about these other cats, and she was determined to learn more of their ways. Besides, her lair-brother, Quiet Hunter, had taken a mate among them. She shifted her paws, waiting for the other female's answer.

Drani shook the sand out of her fur, drew her whiskers back, and opened her mouth slightly to catch the visitor's odor. As soon as she touched her tongue to the taste and odor sensitive place at the roof of her mouth, she knew the newcomer had probably come from the Song-hearing tribe. The other's manner of speaking confirmed the impression, and even the stranger's appearance reminded Drani of Thistle-chaser's mate, Quiet Hunter.

Drani hesitated when she saw the fur rise on the other's nape, but scent told her that the visitor was just nervous. She stood where she was, lifting a friendly tail and making her voice calm.

"Please don't be afraid," she said. "My name is Drani, and I tend herd-beasts and young cubs. May I know your name, Song-hearing one?"

(OOC: Sorry, need to bookmark this, didn't see the reply)

IC: "This one...is called River Eyes," River replied, purring. She liked this Named one. She seemed gentle and friendly. "Maybe call River if...easier." She stood and surveyed the sandy area. Named cubs frisked and played, rolling in the sand and sneezing as the dust went up their noses. River's own nose wrinkled at the dust. "How does this one," she jerked her nose at the Named female, "tend cubs?"

Drani's first instinct was to start a stalking circle around the newcomer, so that she could sniff the base of River's tail, and River could smell hers. But the usual approach to strangers wouldn't quite work here. She knew more about River now than she did about other strangers she encountered. Drani decided that a friendly nose-touch would be better. She took a few steps forward, then settled on her chest in the sand, cocking her ears far forward and stretching her neck out, making it easier and less threatening for River to come to her. At the same time, the position would allow Drani to roll onto her back and defend with claws and teeth if River became aggressive.

"I like your name, River," Drani said. "And the Named are friends with the Song-hearers." She paused, hoping that the wariness in the Song-hearer's eyes would fade. "I watch the young cubs so that they don't stray. If they are still suckling, I feed them, and I keep them from chewing on each other when they play-fight."

River stretched out her neck and tapped Drani's nose with her own. Thistle-Chaser had described the Named greeting habits when River had first approached her about speaking to them. "Thank you," River replied. "This one..I..." she grimaced at the unfamiliar word and continued, "feels pleasure that...you like this one's name." She purred and flicked her tail. "Perhaps I could help with the cubs, as a way of learning more of the Named ways? Suppose this one..I...appear as a cub to many, because do not know Named customs."

In the swirl of scent-tastes that came to Drani, she found an odor that reminded her of Quiet Hunter, although it substituted female lightness for the heavier male tang. This confirmed her impression that the two shared a similar appearance.

"You are related to Quiet Hunter?" she asked River, and added, "I like Quiet. He has helped us to better understand the Song and those who are guided by it. He has also been a kind and gentle mate to Thistle-chaser. So you are a sister? Then, of course, you may stay and help me."

River's ears perked up. Drani knew Quiet! A soft purr rumbled inside her. "This one is glad that you know Quiet, and like him." She flicked her tail and padded closer to Drani. "And this one is glad that can help with cubs. Maybe one day this one will have cubs. Does Drani have cubs?" River watched the cubs playing, searching for any that matched her new friend's scent.

The sun had warmed the sand, and Drani wriggled to get herself more comfortably settled. She tucked her paws under her chest. To River she said, "I do have cubs, but they are too young for the Sandpile. Today they are in the sheltered area we call the nursery, where my friend Bira is taking her turn at caring for all the litterlings."

Drani lowered her head and touched the sand with her whiskers, inviting River to nestle in front of her. "You don't need to feel awkward about how you speak. Quiet has some of the same patterns as you do, and I rather enjoy the way he talks." She lolled her tongue in a quiet cat-laugh, adding, "And there's our Thistle-chaser. I have to listen very hard when she speaks, because she likes to make up new ways of using words."

(Since the main RP is slow and I don't want three characters to do in that one, I thought I introduce a new character here. Maybe she can enter the main RP later.)

Sati prowled on the edge of the named territory, sniffing the unfamiliar scents, purring contently to herself, there had been a scuffle out her she was sure of it. But not knowing any individual scents amongst them, it didn’t matter much to her. She was content to watch and learn from the named, for now.

She stretched herself out in plain view of the meadow, not caring if the named saw her or not. She new she would be quite visible to them her bright orange pelt with her dark black streaks standing as an oddity so far from her homeland, but amongst her own people she had been quite plain, normal looking except for one thing. Her eyes. No one in her family nor even her clan had blue eyes, and she didn’t know if anyone amongst this clan would either.

She doubted that she would be accepted here, but she had to try. She had been on her own for so long…

Drani waited for River's reply, but the other seemed to have fallen asleep in the warm sand. It was just as well, Drani thought to herself. River seemed exhausted.
Drani yawned, but made herself get up. It was time to check on the cubs.

As she padded quietly out of the Sandpile, she caught a whiff of female cat-scent on a stray breeze. She opened her mouth slightly to smell-taste the odor. It was not anyone in the clan, which made her tail flick with surprise.

She pivoted on her rear feet, trying to find the point where the odor was strongest, using her eyes as well. It didn't take long to spot the intruder. In fact, it would have been hard not to see her. The stranger's orange coat with streaks of black stood out glaringly against the green of the meadow. The way she lay boldly in the open, and a slight acrid tang in her scent told Drani that this newcomer didn't care if the Named saw her.

A prickle went down Drani's back, running into her tail and making it twitch. Two strangers in one day! Her head went down with the instinct to stalk the newcomer, but she made herself lift it. She would try a friendly approach first.

Sati swivelled her ears back, purring with contentment, the white spots on her black ears disappearing briefly and she thumped her tail once, twice , three times into the dry earth below her. She turned her heard slowly to look towards the direction of the named one, hoping not to startle her with her large size. She knew she would be much larger and heavier than the named, even as a yearling she had towered over the named visitor who had trekked long and far to pay visit to the Amur clan far to the north.

She smiled, thinking of her friend who had taught her the language, the ways of the named, but flinched, shutting her eyes recalling the painful memory that had taken her friend away from her, and caused her to forsake her homeland and travel southward.

She went to get up, hesitated, and rested against the ground again. She didn’t want to cause alarm over her size, and sent this once scampering back to the named to raise the alarm. Maybe she would just wait for her to come closer. She looked intently at the newcomer purring loudly, and resting in a position that she hoped looked submissive.

E-yarr, that stranger is probably twice my size, Drani thought, and her rear paws danced with the impulse to go into a sideways sidle approach to make the the most impressive appearance. Both the purr and scent from the newcomer spoke of possible friendship, however, and Drani decided to trust. It wasn't easy. Again, instinct warred with reason.

As with River, Drani introduced herself to the newcomer, and extended her neck for a nose-touch. She waited, wondering how much of Named speech the other understood.

[OOC: Stripes and a reference to Amur, hey? Do we have an Amur tiger here? Nice!]

(LOL Clare, Amur (AKA Siberian) tigers are my favourite of the big kitties, so I thought I would be fun to portray someone who comes from a colder climate. I can relate living in AB after all.)

Sati stood up eagerly with her whiskers twitching to greet Drani as she introduced herself, chuckling inwardly as to how much taller she was to the named female. “Grrreetings Drrani,” she said hoping the other didn’t think she was growling at her. Her peculiar way of rolling her rrrs was normal for the Amur clan, and her named friend always thought it funny. “May you eat of the haunch and sleep in the drrrriest den.” Then she bared her throat to the named as was the custom she was taught many years ago.

She panted with her head high in the air, hot, and wishing for a cool dip in the river. She had shed most of her fur on the long trek southward, but she still had much of it left and she wasn't used to the climate yet.

(OOC: Sorry clan kitties, I got caught up in moving. smile.gif)
River stirred and stretching, blinking sleep out of her eyes. The warm sand and Drani's soothing personality had lulled her to sleep. Now, she rolled to her feet, watching as the Named female spoke to another female, this one had a bright orange pelt and black stripes. 'So many new ones to meet,' River thought. She sat down, curling her tail around her feet. Flicking her ears forward, she listened to the exchange. 'Orange furred one not of Named, but speaks as they do,' she thought, brow furrowing in confusion. 'This one should wait and see. This one does not want to scare other female.' Settling deeper into the sand, River watched and waited.
